Ok, I think I have it figured out now...
Many websites offer affiliate programs that pay commissions on sales that you generate. When you sign up for an affiliate program you are given your own unique referral link so the sale can be traced to you.
What I think these type from home companies do is provide you with a list of websites that offer referral programs. You are probably the one that has to pay to place an ad with a major search engine in hopes that someone will click on your ad and generate a sale for you.
To sum it all up: If you can write a good enough ad and get a good enough commission you will be able to cover your expense in placing the ads and make money...Otherwise, you loose money.
Thats my guess anyways...
