Hi Claire,
You've raised an interesting question. When we were developing our website I think one of the recommendations is not to have too many links off to other sites. Seemingly the search engines move off, as well as your customers.
We were advised to open up a new page so that our customers can easily stay on our site. I personnally prefer if a new window is opened as using a back arrow can get confusing.
