EI for the Self-Employed

I suppose most Canadian entrepreneurs already know this: there are employment insurance benefits for the self employed individual. I haven't signed up for the program. The CFIB warns in an article about this that:
Once you have received EI special benefits, you must continue to pay EI premiums on your self-employment income for the entire duration of your self-employed career, regardless of any change in the nature of your self-employment.

I have insurance that covers me should I get sick or hospitalized. And if I wanted to I could cancel the insurance. I think this is a much better option than EI.
